Sudoku Rules for Beginners

Sudoku has a simple rule set: every row, every column, and every outlined box must contain each number once. Large Sudoku presents those rules in a calm, readable way.

The three checks

Start by looking at one row, one column, or one 3x3 box. A number can go in a square only if it does not already appear in all three places.

Given numbers are part of the puzzle. The player fills only the empty squares.

  • Rows go left to right.
  • Columns go top to bottom.
  • Boxes are the bold 3x3 sections inside the board.

Best first step

Very Easy or Easy is the right starting point for most older adults. The extra clues reduce frustration while the rules become familiar.

Practical Questions

Do I have to guess?

Beginner puzzles should usually have logical next steps. Guessing is not the goal.

Should beginners use notes?

Notes can help later, but first-time players may prefer Very Easy puzzles with fewer empty squares.
